Drove from Bengaluru to Udupi & back: Key pointers on road conditions

The 10-12 km stretch From Sakleshpur bypass end to the start of the concreted section of Shirady ghat road is in total shambles.

BHPian sandsun7 recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Did a Bangalore- Mangalore- Udupi- Bangalore round trip last Saturday/Sunday.

Onward: Bangalore- Hassan- Sakleshpura bypass- Shirady ghats- Nellyadi- BC Road- Mangalore.

Bangalore to Hassan Bypass end - excellent roads. The entry to Sakleshpura bypass from Hassan side is a bit confusing as we have to cross over to the right side of the dual carriageway and continue for a KM or so driving against oncoming traffic before getting back to the left lane.

The 10-12 km stretch From Sakleshpur bypass end to the start of the concreted section of Shirady ghat road is in total shambles. Then on to Gundya and a few kms beyond is in good condition with occasional diversions for bridge works. Post Nellyadi, proper construction zone begins with lot of diversions and some terrible patches around these diversions. the worst stretch is from Mani to BC road. Road inside Kalladka town is in absolute terrible condition with the ongoing elevated section. I had to crawl in 10-20Kmph there. Post BC road, surface is excellent upto Mangalore.

Return was from Udupi via Shirve- Nitte-Bajagoly- GVKere-Belthangady- Ujjire- Dharmasthala- Shirady- Sakleshpura bypass-Hassan

The NH66-Shirve- Belman is wide but has sporadic bad patches. Once you enter the Padubidri-karkala road here, the surface is superb up to Karkala turnoff. Then again its patchy with intermittent good surfaces.
around GVkere to Belthangady and Ujjire, road work is going on and this stretch also has lot of bad patches. From Ujjire, to NH75 via Dharmasthala, there are occasional bad pactches and few potholes here and there, but generally surface is manageable.

Onward journey took 7hrs 30 min driving time with a 5AM start and return 8 hr 30 min with a 1.30PM start from Udupi.
