Did the yearly service on my 16 Suzuki Access recently. It was bought pre-owned in 2020 with 22k on the ODO. Done close to 37k now. It does about 3k every year in daily short commutes.
I usually change the oil at around 2.5-3k. But recently I started to see some amount of oil consumption after about 2K on Motul LE 10W30. I had to top up about 100-150ml in total before the oil change on two occasions. So decided to change the usual Motul LE mineral which I've been using on my scooters for last 10years, to Mobile Semi Synthetic in 10W30 grade. FS is overkill for a 125 scooter that does local duties. There is no visible oil smoke or anything. I need to see if the consumption persists or gets worse.
Did the usual Oil and air filter replacement plus the spark plugs because it was probably never changed in it's lifetime. BS4 model Access takes 650ml of engine oil and 50 ml of transmission oil. Engine oil itself is used as transmission oil according to the Suzuki owner's manual. I replace it with every oil change.
Also decided to replace both worn out grips and what a difference in feel and refinement. This is a must for any old motorcycle owner and transforms the riding experience. You can make finer throttle inputs and it dampens the vibrations to an extent.
The overall cost for spares (filter+plugs+grips) was about 500INR. Plus the 300INR for the engine oil. No labor charges as I did all the work. Overall there was a noticeable difference in how the scooter rode after all this. Which was a little surprising. Let's see how long that lasts
I did a full carb cleaning and fork oil replacement prior to the yearly service. Saw the first effects of Ethanol blended fuel on our old carbed motorcycles. The float bowl gasket/o-ring was swollen and it just won't fit into the groove again. It was perfectly fine two years ago. I had to cut and superglue the o-ring to ensure a good seal on the float bowl. Will replace it later.
Did a minor AFR tune. For some reason my economy went from a consistent 38-39kmpl to 43-44kmpl post the carb rebuild. I tested this on 3 different tank-to-tank cycles and it was consistent. My only hunch is that maybe fuel was getting vaporized through the ill-fitting float bowl gasket? Or is it the two bottles of Yamaha PEA carbon cleaner?
