BMW, Jaguar Land Rover to co-develop electric drive units

BMW and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) have announced a collaboration to co-develop electric drive units (EDU). The two companies have joined hands to share know-how and resources needed in the development of autonomous driving, connectivity, electrification and services (ACES).

A joint team of BMW and JLR personnel in Munich will work on the development of the EDUs. Both companies will produce these drivetrains at their respective manufacturing units. The EDUs will be developed to suit the requirements of each partner.

The collaboration is expected to help both carmakers take advantage of cost efficiencies arising from shared development of future evolutions and production planning costs as well as economies of scale from joint purchasing.
