Our Audi A4 turned 3 years old this week and continues to impress and be a very easy car to live with. The suspension and NVH is really helping cut down on driving and traveling fatigue for my dad who travels out of Pune almost every weekend to rural parts of Maharashtra.
Night-driving is extremely comfortable due to superlative headlights as well as the fact that both the ORVMS as well as the IRVM are auto-dimming. External auto dimming ORVMS on both sides is a really rare and underrated feature in all Audis and reduce eye-strain quite a bit.
The Floret Silver is quite understated and much to the taste of my parents and doesn't have the 'Look-at-me' quality of a brighter or more exotic shade. The lights definitely turn heads though.
Fuel Efficiency:
Since 70% of our car usage is on highways, the car has delivered really good efficiency over its lifetime. Since the purchase, the long term fuel efficiency over 41000 kilometres stands at an impressive 13.2 kmpl. Not bad for a 2.0 L Turbo Petrol with 200 horses on tap.
Last weekend we did a trip from Kothrud, Pune to BKC, Mumbai via the Atal Setu with a light foot in Comfort mode (not Efficiency) from 7 am to 10 am and ended up with 20 kmpl. Pure highway and expressway mileage was 24 kmpl. The car will happily sit at 100 kmph all day in 7th gear and return 20+ kmpl easily.
Tyre Replacement:
Two months ago, while driving back from Sangli, the stock Hankooks developed bulges on three of four tyres in the same trip. Both rear tyres and one of the front tyres had compromised sidewalls and we had to nurse the car back home for around 100 kilometres at a speed of 60-70 kmph.
Since these tyres had already done 40,000 kilometres, we decided to not waste too much time searching for a cause and raising an insurance claim and went ahead and replaced these tyres with Continental ContiSport tyres.
There has been a noticeable improvement in grip and reduction in road noise after this tyre change. Total damage to the wallet was around Rs. 42k including alignment and balancing.
Hoping that these tyres will last for at least 50k kilometres now.
Servicing and Insurance Expenses:
Being our first luxury car purchase, we were apprehensive of maintenance costs but thankfully, we have had no warranty claims, faulty parts or out of the ordinary maintenance expenses.
The car has undergone 3 services at the Audi Pune ASC and the costs have been around Rs. 25k which seems reasonable. However, the Audi service calculator mentions an amount around Rs. 20k while the first work estimate they send is full of extras which push the cost to Rs.40,000. After calling them and telling them to remove these, they are happy to comply but you need to keep a watch.
Insurance expenses for each renewal with all covers apart from RTI this year onwards have been in the range of Rs. 60k.
Hoping the car continues to chug along like this for many years! There has been a downpour of A4s on the forum and with good reason!
