13-yr-old Vento automatic: Rear door issue and 1.5 lakh km on the odo

Some smart guy at the service centre decided to engage the child lock on that door while cleaning the car. Now we couldn't open it at all, whether from inside or outside!

BHPian noopster recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Had a unique issue pop up during the last servicing.

My left rear door latch was malfunctioning for quite some time (maybe 2 years at least) and it caused a funny situation: the door refused to open from the outside, had to be opened from inside. It was an irritant but VW insisted the only way to fix it was to change the latch and that would cost over 5K. The Vento these days is mostly solo-driven plus even if there is someone in the backseat, it wasn't too much hassle to open it from the outside. We got used to it and even joked about it being a "reverse child lock".

So what happened at the last service was that some smart guy decided to engage the child lock on that door while cleaning the car. Which meant that now we couldn't open the door at all, whether from inside or outside!

It would have still been OK if this was the right rear door but since it's the left side, I told VW to get it fixed. He started saying 5K plus etc. I insisted that they offer me something reasonable since it was their fault this door was now unusable! Finally, they came back saying we could get it done for 2.8K and I said OK.

Door works fine now. Also, I crossed a milestone without realising it (haven't been driving the car much myself). Only noticed when I had to take it to the office the other day and by then alas it was too late!

1.5L kms completed in just over 13 years! Not bad for a petrol automatic eh?
