Volkswagen has launched the Polo hatchback with a new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine. The car is priced at Rs. 5,41,800 (ex-showroom).
The 1.0-litre unit replaces the 1.2-litre engine that has been powering the Polo since the car was introduced in India in 2009. The new 999 cc, 3-cylinder, naturally-aspirated petrol engine produces 75 BHP @ 6,200 rpm and 95 Nm of torque @ 3,000-4,000 rpm. In comparison, the old 1.2-litre unit produced 74 BHP @ 5,400 rpm and 110 Nm @ 3,750 rpm. The engine is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and has an ARAI-certified fuel economy figure of 18.78 km/l.
According to Volkswagen, the 1.0-litre engine will replace the 1.2-litre MPI unit across its product range. This suggests that carmaker is likely to introduce the new engine in the Ameo sometime in the future.
The Polo will continue to be offered with the 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, which produces 89 BHP @ 4,200 rpm and 230 Nm @ 1,500-2500 rpm. Further, Volkswagen will continue to offer the Polo in GT TSI and GT TDI guises. The GT TSI uses a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that makes 104 BHP @ 5,000 rpm and 175 Nm @ 1,500-4100 rpm. The GT TDI uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel unit that produces 109 BHP @ 4,400 rpm and 250 Nm @ 1,500-2,500 rpm.
