VW emissions scandal: FIR filed against VW and Audi in India

The first FIR in India against Volkswagen and Audi for installing a cheat device to misrepresent emissions has been filed.

The FIR was filed in Noida by Aniljit Singh against top officials of Volkswagen and Audi in India. These include Rahil Ansari, Brand Director, Audi India as well as Balbir Singh Dhillon, Head, Audi India. The FIR also names Bram Schot, Chairman, Audi AG.

The FIR has been lodged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including forgery, cheating and criminal conspiracy.

The media report states that the complainant had purchased 7 Audi cars in 2018. At the time of delivery, the complainant had inquired if cars sold in India also had the emissions cheating device installed. He was told that no such device was installed as the emission norms in India weren't as stringent as other countries. However, the National Green Tribunal later found that nitrogen oxide emissions from Audi cars was 5-8 times the permissible limit and had imposed a fine of Rs. 500 crore on Volkswagen.

Having realised that he had been duped, he decided to lodge a formal complaint against the brands. The complainant alleged that the officials forged documents and made wrong records to capture the market under a pre-planned conspiracy.
