Volvo has imported multiple units of the XC90 R7 variant into India. The same model was imported a month back for homologation purposes. Hence, these recent import points towards the company's plans to launch the variant in the near future.

The 'R' in the nomenclature of the XC90 R7 refers to the car being an R-Design version. Thus, the new variant will get various cosmetic changes like a gloss black finish on the front grille, matte silver ORVMs, a redesigned front bumper, 20-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels, and a larger rear spoiler. The interiors get Nappa leather seats with R-Design branding, and a darker headliner. Carbon fibre inserts detail the centre console and the gear level area.

Powering the new Volvo XC90 R7 is the same 2.0-litre diesel engine that does duty in the existing model range. But, the power mill has an added compressor and air-tank that is used to force compressed air into the turbocharger in order for it spool instantly. This helps in reducing turbo lag and enhancing the car's pulling power. The engine develops 225 BHP.

The new variant is also expected to come with Volvo's 'Pilot Assist II' system that is capable of driving the XC90 at speeds of up to 130 km/h on the highways, with minimal driver inputs. It is also likely to get features like Run-off Road Mitigation System and Animal Detection system.
