Volvo - UD Trucks to foray into India?

Volvo holds a 50% stake in VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd, which is basically a joint venture between Volvo and Eicher Motors. The JV recently commissioned a plant for manufacturing new Euro 3, 4, 5 and 6 compliant medium-duty engines at Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh. These engines are meant for local as well as export markets.

Rumour mills insist that Volvo is contemplating bringing in its UD Truck range; this line of commercial vehicles could complement the current Eicher truck range. Eicher holds a competitive position in the Light Commercial Vehicle segment, but it lags behind Tata Motors & Ashok Leyland in the Medium - Heavy vehicle segment. Now, it is understood that Volvo wants to fill in this gap by bringing in the range from UD Trucks - formerly known as Nissan Diesels.

The attached picture is of a 49 tonne tractor trailer from the Quon Extra Heavy range. Currently, there are two engine options available, though both are from the higher power segment. Volvo might adapt the powertrain options in line with Indian market conditions.
