The Volvo S90 sedan has been launched in India at a price tag of Rs. 53.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The S90 will initially be available with only one engine option and in a single Inscription variant. It will be brought into the country through the CBU route. Deliveries of the S90 will start from the next month, i.e., December 2016.

The S90 is built on Volvo's new modular SPA platform that also underpins the XC90 flagship SUV. The sedan borrows various design cues from its SUV sibling. It gets Volvo's new Thor's Hammer LED DRLs, full-LED headlamps, a chrome-lined vertically slated front grille, and a wide air dam. At 4,963 mm, the S90 is the longest offering in its segment. The rear gets a boxy treatment, while the prominent Volvo badge sits in the centre of the boot lid, between the two c-shaped taillights.

Interiors of the S90 too are inspired from the XC90. The dashboard is a home to leather wrapped elements, walnut inserts, and chrome bezels. The fully-loaded Inscription trim comes with features like electrically adjustable front seats with memory function and ventilation, nappa leather upholstery, lumbar support, heads up display, independent air rear suspension, and hands-free tailgate. It also gets a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay and Navigation, and is connected to a 19-speaker sound system from Bowers & Wilkins.

Currently, the S90 will be offered with only a D4 engine. This 2.0-litre diesel unit churns out 187 BHP @ 4250 rpm and 400 Nm @ 1750-2500 rpm. It is mated to an 8-speed Aisin automatic gearbox. A D5 trim that uses the same engine in a retuned state to generate 232 BHP and 480 Nm will be introduced later next year. Volvo has also indicated that it might bring petrol and hybrid versions of the S90 to India after seeing customer response.

The Volvo S90 will be competing in the mid-size luxury sedan segment that includes the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the new Jaguar XF.
