Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI spotted in India

A 5-door Volkswagen Polo with test number plates has been spotted on Indian roads. This car is rumoured to be a new 1.4 TSI variant of the hatchback. There is also a possibility that the spotted test mule houses a 1.0-litre TSI engine, which was imported last year for testing.

Volkswagen has been the front-runner when it comes to introducing hot hatches in the Indian market. The GT twins laid the foundation for the hot hatch segment, while the Polo GTI, which was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo, is likely take the game to another level, once it is launched. The price gap between these products is very wide. While the Polo GT twins cost around the Rs. 10 lakh mark, the 1.8-litre GTI is expected to cross the Rs. 20 lakh price tag. The void between the GT and GTI in the hot hatch portfolio of the company might be filled if the automaker decides to launch the 1.4 TSI. But if the spotted Polo is the 1.0 TSI variant, it would likely replace the existing 1.2-litre GT TSI model.

The Polo 1.4 TSI is powered by a 1.4-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 145 BHP. The car is reported to be able to do a 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.0 seconds. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Meanwhile, the Polo 1.0 TSI gets a 1.0-litre engine that develops 94 BHP and 118 Nm of torque.

Interestingly, the car that was spotted had BlueMotion stickers on it, which means that the new Polo TSI will come with Volkswagen's BlueMotion technology - which the company claims, increases the vehicle's fuel efficiency.

If Volkswagen launches the Polo 1.4 TSI in India, it would be a direct rival for the Fiat Abarth Punto.
