Volkswagen to introduce 4 new models in next 2 years

German carmaker Volkswagen, has revealed that it plans to introduce four new models in India over the next two years. The four new models include a new compact sedan, the Beetle, the Passat B8 and the Tiguan SUV.

At present, Volkswagen does not have a compact sedan to take on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze. The segment is highly lucrative and with even Ford gearing up to enter it with the Figo Aspire, Volkswagen does not want to be too far behind. The new car will be based on the Polo's platform. It is also likely to share the same 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine with the hatchback. Higher variants of the car are expected to get DSG gearboxes.

The Beetle will be Volkswagen's halo product in India. The company will not expect to sell too many units of the car. The Beetle uses the same PQ35 platform as the Jetta and features retro looks. Information on the engine options is awaited.

The Passat B8 is underpinned by Volkswagen's expanded MQB platform. It is larger, but lighter than its predecessor. The Passat gets a new triple-slat grille, a restyled front bumper and narrower headlamps with LEDs. At the rear there is a slimmer pair of LED tail lamps, new bumper and twin exhausts. On the inside, there is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, head-up display and infotainment system with Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Passat is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that will produce 187 BHP. The engine will be mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission. The Passat is expected to be priced higher than the outgoing model.

Rounding up the list is the next-generation Tiguan SUV. This vehicle is yet to be unveiled. It will be built on the MQB platform and is likely to come with a 2.0-litre TDI engine. More details about the Tiguan are expected to surface when it is revealed later this year.
