Upgrading from a 2016 Camry: Get the Fortuner 4X4 AT or an MG Gloster?

I was considering the Hycross ZX(O) as a friend had a booking from the time of launch and was confident of getting the car delivered within a fortnight.

BHPian shardul_pathak recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Hi guys, I am dealing with a perennial dilemma of buying a new car. After parting ways with my 2016 Camry, I am left with an urgent need to fill the space with another car.

I had contemplated buying another Camry, albeit the hybrid version but recent rains in my city and a harrowing experience by my wife and mother has swayed me away. The only options I am looking at buying now are SUVs. Not considering the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari for all of former's niggles and latter’s ASS nightmares I have read about.

What options am I left with? I was considering the Hycross ZX(O) as a friend has a booking form the time of launch and was confident of getting the car delivered within a fortnight, but when checked with the dealer he was informed that since he had already passed on the offer for taking delivery twice, his priority had moved way down.

Given my urgency I have booked a 4X4 AT Fortuner in black with a dealer in Jaipur. I am not given a fixed time for delivery yet and was told at the time of booking that the car will take 3 weeks to come as black Fortuners are only built on order.

Its been 2 weeks since and the dealer had informed that my car was not in their supply sheet for the month of November either.

Now that I have 2 more weeks at best before the car arrives, I am left thinking if the new Fortuner with a 52 Lakh on road price, is even worth the money? My requirements are a ladder on frame, 4X4 automatic SUV, with no nonsense ownership experience for the next decade.

I love road trips and would take the car throughout the country.

Do I have any other options apart form the Fortuner? I am aware of the bad ride quality, heavy steering and poor NVH levels. Is the Gloster worth considering?

If I plan to stick with the Fortuner, what kind of discounts can I expect form the dealer? Can people with recent experiences please help me with striking a deal?

Here's what BHPian Sensible_Speed had to say on the matter:

There are much better ladder frame options from Mahindra than there ever was. If I were you, I'd pick the Scorpio-N or a Thar Roxx 4x4 with my eyes closed and never think about it again. They both cost half the Fortuner's price and are more comfortable to be in. Your only headwind would be the delivery times. But, hold off on buying a Fortuner.

Here's what BHPian SR-71 had to say on the matter:

Coming from a Camry, Fortuner probably is not your first best choice, considering the significant difference in ride quality. With 50L kitty you have the choice of Skoda Kodiaq, Hyundai Tuscon, VW Tiguan, MG Gloster and the Jeep Meridian in the SUV segment with 4WD capability. All these options will still leave a few Ls behind, in your kitty and have much better ride quality compared to the Fortuner. If you are strictly restricting yourself to BoF, then Gloster is probably the only alternative, I guess. But if you are willing to overlook the BoF requirement, the Tucson might tick rest of your requirements.

Please try a crossover like the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
