In November 2014, we had reported that UML, a collaboration between UM Motorcycles and Lohia Auto, had revealed its plans to launch cruiser motorcycles in the 300-500 cc range in India in the second quarter of 2015. The company has now officially confirmed that it will be launching a 400 cc cruiser in the period.
The cruiser motorcycle for the Indian market is newly designed and will sport disc brakes with ABS. UML also plans to export the 400 cc engine to various countries. While the company intends to develop India as a hub to produce higher capacity engines as well, it does not have any plans to launch any motorcycle with an engine displacement more than 500 cc in the country.
UML has plans to open dealerships in western and southern India. It is targeting a network of 75 dealers across 50 cities in India by July 2015. For the domestic market, the company will build motorcycles at the Lohia Auto facility at Kashipur, Uttarakhand. The plant has an installed annual capacity of 1,00,000 units.
