Triumph Motorcycles has taken the wraps off its new affordable range of bikes developed in collaboration with Bajaj Auto: Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X. Both models will be launched in India on July 5, 2023.
The new Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X have been developed by Triumph and will be manufactured at the brand's manufacturing facilities in Hinckley and Thailand. Both bikes will also be built locally at Bajaj's Chakan plant.
The Speed 400 is a neo-retro roadster featuring a clean design. It has a circular LED headlamp with a teardrop-shaped fuel tank and a single-piece seat. The bike features bar-end mirrors, a single upswept exhaust and 17-inch alloy wheels shod with Metzeler Sportec M9 RR tyres.
The Speed 400 is equipped with an upside-down front fork offering 130 mm of travel and a mono-shock at the rear. Braking power is provided by a 300 mm rotor at the front and a single disc at the rear.
The Scrambler 400X is designed to tackle rough roads. While it retains the same design, the bike has a 2-piece seat set at 835 mm, compared to 790 mm on the Speed 400, longer travel suspension, wide handlebars with knuckle guards and a 19-inch front wheel shod with dual-purpose tyres.
The Scrambler 400X also has a slightly longer wheelbase compared to the roadster and weighs 9 kg more than the 170 kg Speed 400. The bike also gets a larger 320 mm brake disc at the front.
Both models are powered by a 398cc, liquid-cooled engine that makes 39.5 BHP @ 8,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm @ 6,500 rpm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox via a torque-assist clutch.
The bikes come equipped with an analogue instrument console with a small LCD screen, a USB charging port, ride-by-wire and dual-channel ABS.
