Triumph Speed 400: 11 finer observations for a prospective buyer

There definitely are minor ugly welds. I just wonder how & why they don't count.

BHPian shyamg28 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I visited the newly opened Khivraj Triumph showroom, Whitefield, Bangalore. It only opened 3 days ago. Test rides for anyone that had not already booked the vehicle was out of the question. Sales rep mentioned about 2 months before test rides would open up to general public. That's when the Scrambler 400X releases too I guess.

A few general observations:

  • The coolant reservoir right below the engine inside the sump guard - I'm wondering why the designers/engineers decided to take such a big risk. It's not like the bike has 250mm ground clearance as well. In fact, ground clearance is definitely on the lower side.
  • The rider and pillion footpegs are too close to each other. Riders that rest the ball of their foot on the pegs, will end up fouling with the rear pillion's foot. I tested this out.
  • The gear lever has some play for adjustment to accommodate riding boots etc.
  • There definitely are minor ugly welds. I just wonder how & why they don't count. Personally, this counts for little to me anyway.
  • The bar end mirrors - I liked! Surprisingly. They have excellent adjustment and at least in the showroom, offered a great unobstructed view of the wall behind. You can almost completely remove trace of your own arm from the field of view. Filtering in traffic will be affected though. On my own bike, I have removed the knuckle guards so as to enable easier filtering in city.
  • Handlebar is wide and with my 5.10 height, I was leaning ever so slightly.
  • The engine was started and stopped so often in a 30 minute window, that by the 15-20th minute that I was there, the cooling fans came on. At which point, the sales rep brought out the keys to another bike lol.
  • The indicator looks identical to the KTMs. Not sure if it is indeed a lift and shift (I'm guessing not of course).
  • The black is not actually a complete black. The tank paint design is the same on all - blue/red/black, a strip in between and then metallic shiny grey towards the rider. Even on the black.
  • The side stand has a rubber stopper, which seemed like a nice touch. The side stand itself needed some love for sure. On a brand new bike it refused to come down or go back up by itself. A non binary motion if you will. WD40 or the like needed lol.
  • Vibrations - cannot and should not comment before riding it. I did feel some high frequency vibes when just revving it at stand still. All below 4k rpm. I'm discounting this feeling myself for now though, without really riding it.

Interesting motorcycle this one! Seems inviting:
