Toyota Yaris Cross unveiled with Hybrid AWD powertrain

Toyota has unveiled the Yaris Cross. The car is expected to be launched in the European market in 2021.

The Yaris Cross is the second model to be based on Toyota's TNGA-B platform. The car measures 4,180 mm long, 1,765 mm wide and 1,560 mm tall. The wheelbase of the car is the same as the Yaris at 2,560 mm, but it is longer by 240 mm.

The Yaris Cross is slightly larger than the car it is based on. It gets a large grille in the front, wraparound headlights with LED daytime running lights and a full-width air dam below. Viewed from the sides, it gets large squared-off wheel arches, black cladding on the lower edges and a dual-tone roof option. At the back, the car gets a dual-tone bumper. It has a black insert in the middle with slim wraparound tail lamps and the blue T-logo in the centre.

On the inside, the new platform is claimed to offer improved spaced, a raised seating positing thanks to a 30 mm increase in ground clearance and a folding seat system at the back that offers multiple space utilisation options for carrying luggage. The interior comes with a black and dark brown colour scheme and gets features like a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel, a large centrally mounted infotainment system, ambient lighting, automatic day/night IRVM and powered tailgate.

A new 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder, Atkinson-cycle petrol engine derived from the larger 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre hybrid engines powers the Yaris Cross. The car uses Toyota's 4th-generation hybrid system. Exact specifications have not yet been released but an AWD variant is going to be offered along with the standard FWD option.
