Toyota beats GM to become USA's top-selling car brand in 2021

GM though, states that it will bounce back in 2022 as the supply of semiconductors improves.

Toyota has become USA's top-selling car brand of 2021, overtaking General Motors (GM).

The Japanese carmaker registered 2.33 million vehicle sales last year, compared to the 2.21 million units sold by General Motors. As per reports, GM sales went down by 13% in 2021, while Toyota car sales improved by 10% compared to their respective 2020 annual sales figures.

General Motors has been the largest player in the US automotive market for close to 90 years. The loss to Toyota marks the first time that the Detroit-based automobile giant has not led the US automotive market, since 1931.

Sales of General Motors have been severely hit by the shortage of semiconductors. GM though, states that it will bounce back in 2022 as the supply of semiconductors improves.
