Toll Tax on National Highways suspended till Nov 11

As a step to minimize inconvenience due to the demonetization process of Indian currency notes, the Government of India has suspended all toll taxes on national highways till November 11, 2016. The decision was announced by the Union Minister of Transport and Highways, who tweeted: "It has been decided to suspend Toll across all National Highways till midnight of November 11, to facilitate smooth traffic movement."

This decision comes on the backdrop of demonetization of Rs. 1000 and Rs. 500 notes in the country. This process has banned the use of these high-denomination, older currency notes in India. Hence the only notes that can currently be used are those of denominations up to Rs. 100. However, since the demonetization announcement was made in the late evening of November 8, many people weren't able to get their hands on enough lower currency notes.

The new currency will take a couple of days to thoroughly reach the branched banking system. Unavailability of denominations up to Rs. 100 was resulting in huge traffic lines at major toll booths across the country. Thus all Government-run toll booths that fall under the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) have been suspended till Friday, November 11.
