Team-BHP scoops uncamouflaged images of the Suzuki YL1 sedan

Come 2014, a brand new sedan, now code-named the YL1, will become a part of Maruti Suzuki's C-segment sedan line up. Team-BHP has just scooped images of an uncamouflaged YL1 sedan, in various angles. The YL1 sedan could possibly replace the slow selling (By Maruti Suzuki standards) SX4 in India. With its design heavily inspired by the Suzuki AuthenticS concept, the YL1 sedan will be available with petrol and turbo diesel engine options.

A 1.4 liter K-Series petrol engine and a 1.3 liter Fiat Multijet turbo diesel engine are the two motors that will be on offer in the YL1. A 5 speed manual gearbox will be standard in the initial batches of the car. For now, an automatic gearbox hasn't been confirmed for the YL1. However, since the 1.4 liter K-Series petrol engine, in the Indonesia-spec Ertiga, is offered with a 4 speed automatic gearbox, such an option might eventually make it to the YL1 sedan as well.

The un-camouflaged images clearly indicate that the YL1's design is inspired by the Suzuki AuthenticS concept. The car features headlamps that have a sharply raked design, a-la-Swift/Ertiga. The headlamps of the YL1 go a step further to add projectors even in the base LXi/LDi models. As detailed in Team-BHP's previous reports, here and here, the YL1 will dig into Maruti Suzuki part bins and share parts with the likes of the Swift and the Ertiga.

This parts sharing isn't surprising considering the fact that the YL1 sedan is based on the Ertiga platform, which itself is based upon the stretched Swift platform. The extensive parts sharing and local manufacture in India is expected to allow Maruti Suzuki to price the car quite competitively. Spacious interiors with premium fit and finish, in keeping with the standards of C-segment cars in India, are expected to be offered on the YL1 even as Maruti Suzuki makes yet another bid to crack a segment it hasn't had much success in.
