Tata Harrier's OMEGA platform revealed

Tata Motors has released more details of its Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced (OMEGA) architecture that underpins the upcoming Harrier SUV.

Tata's new OMEGA platform is derived from Land Rover's D8 architecture and features a similar wheelbase, door apertures, front suspension architecture, seating and steering positions. The company claims that the monocoque uses lightweight and high tensile materials for better torsional and bending stiffness suited for Indian driving conditions. Further, the isolated sub-frame is claimed to reduce NVH. The design also incorporates crumple zones.

In terms of design, the Harrier is based on Tata's Impact Design 2.0 philosophy. It features a stacked headlamp setup with slim LED DRLs on top and a V-shaped grille at the front. The SUV has a high shoulder line and flared wheel arches and slim wraparound tail lamp clusters at the rear. The interior of the car features a floating touchscreen infotainment system, a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster with an analogue speedometer.

Reports suggest that the Harrier could be powered by a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine. While a 6-speed manual could be offered as standard, Tata might also offer a Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic transmission.
