Tata to build large EV battery plant in the UK

The Indian car brand was initially also considering Spain for their battery plant but finalised on Somerset in the UK.

According to media reports, Tata Motors will build a large electric vehicle battery plant in the UK. Officials from Tata Motors are expected to fly to the UK sometime next week to meet Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and finalise the deal.

While details of the upcoming battery plant are under wraps, reports suggest that it could create as many as 9000 jobs in the UK. The Indian car brand was initially also considering Spain for their battery plant but finalised on Somerset in the UK as their location.

Reports state, the British government offered incentive packages worth millions of dollars to try and attract the car brand to set up the battery plant. Tata Motors is said to have been convinced with the UK because of its skilled automotive workforce and the heritage of Jaguar Land Rover, which it owns.

The UK government had previously committed 300 million GBP to the Tata Group to subsidise, upgrade and decarbonise its facility in Port Talbot, South Wales.
