Should I sell my 2 year old Toyota Innova Crysta for a Hycross?

My question to all of you guys is that should I go ahead and upgrade to the Hycross or wait for sometime and keep using the trusted Crysta?

BHPian Dr.Car recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Hi everyone, let me give some background about this post. We bought an Innova Crysta 2.4 Z AT in June, 2022, a few months before the launch of Hycross. Even though, there was news that a new Innova Model was launching, the itch to get a new car got the better of us (Me and my family)

Now, after the launch of Hycross, it's a bittersweet experience. On one hand I'm happy that ours is a better, more rigid and abuse friendly BoF chassis but on the hand the features and the ride quality of the Hycross' Monocoque chassis is making me regret my decision a little.

Even though the Crysta is a comfortable car, but my family often experiences a lot of body roll especially on the winding roads in hills. They actually enjoy being more in our 2016 Honda City which feels more well planted on both expressways and hilly roads.

Our running is quite low and the car has just clocked around 9,000 Km till date. We mostly do long trips only in the Crysta but sometimes drive in the city as well. It is mostly self driven and occasionally by chauffeurs. Due to this, the heft of the steering also makes it a bit difficult one to drive in the city (Even though I enjoy Hydraulic steerings but others in my family are used to Electronic steerings and find it to be a little cumbersome.)

Another thing is that we got the Crysta for about 31L OTR which I think might make the resale of the car a little difficult since people can buy the VX variant of the Hycross around that price as well.

So, my question to all of you guys is that should I go ahead and upgrade to the Hycross or wait for sometime and keep using the trusted Crysta? Thanks

Here's what BHPian car_guy1998 had to say in this matter:

If I were you, I'd not suggest selling even though you get good resale. This is coming from a Hycross Hybrid user, whose car has run close to 46000 Kms in 15 months. Though we are happy with the Hycross, I still wanted the Crysta due to Diesel AT combo and BOF. By the time we had decided to get the car, Toyota had discontinued the Crysta D AT and relaunched it in MT guise, which we weren't keen on as our usage is in city most of the time and moreover, dad didn't like the last row of Crysta when compared to previous gen Innova and our Hycross.

And, you won't get such combo (Diesel AT) anymore at the price point of 30L as Toyota had restricted the AT gearbox to Hycross.

And, moreover, 9000 Kms on the odo, means the car is still in run-in period.

Even we too own a 4th gen City but dad still prefers to drive the Hycross even for short distances these days. Also, my City's steering felt bit hard after driving the Hycross in city traffic, whose steering is feather light.

Since you are planning to trade in your Crysta with Hycross, I'll list the pros and cons of both the cars below.

What you gain in Hycross over Crysta:

- Better 3rd row space, which my dad preferred over Crysta

- Better FE when compared to Crysta Diesel in city (Hycross gives 16-18 Kmpl based on my experience while Crysta gives 10-12 Kmpl if driven in same conditions)

- Smooth and refined petrol hybrid engine mated to e-CVT and that Hybrid system is future proof but bit concerned about its reliability in future

- Steering felt feather light and easy while taking u-turns in city

- Interiors looks better when compared to Crysta IMO

- Better ride quality due to being built on Monocoque chassis

What you gain in Crysta over Hycross:

- BOF chassis, which is very useful for rough terrains

- Still prefer the looks of Crysta though Hycross is no less in terms of looks

But, someday I'd love to own a used Crysta in 2.8 AT guise if I get a well maintained one when I come back to India for good.

Meanwhile, here's what BHPian DicKy replied:

Assuming you have liked the Hycross after TDing it and considering your very low running, better to sell off the Crysta right now and get the Hycross. Though be warned to have a proper TD of the Hycross so that you don't get seller's remorse. You won't be able to buy a brand new car like the Innova Crysta today.

Don't fret about the purchase price. A Crysta prospective buyer is forced to buy the Hycross if he really wants an automatic transmission. There are plenty of people waiting to lap up a used Crysta automatic, that too with such low running.

Rationally if it is just FOMO and wanting latest, would say keep the Crysta. But here you do find it difficult to drive the car, and with your extremely low running, a BS6 diesel isn't ideal.
