SC very firm: Only BS6 cars from April 2020

According to a media report, the Supreme Court has reiterated its stand on the introduction of BS-VI compliant vehicles. The court has said that no BS-IV vehicle shall be sold in the country from April 1, 2020.

Bharat Stage-VI (BS-VI) emission norms are set to come into force from April 1, 2020. In December 2017, the government had issued a draft notification to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. It said that new BS-IV compliant vehicles built before April 1, 2020 must be registered before June 30, 2020. Further, September 30, 2020 could be the deadline to register BS-IV compliant commercial vehicles manufactured before April 1, 2020.

Earlier, the government had announced that it would move to BS-VI norms, skipping BS-V norms in the process. Meanwhile, oil companies started supplying BS-VI grade fuels to Delhi from April 1, 2018. The cleaner fuels will be available across India by April 1, 2020.
