Rumour: VW Tiguan to launch as a 5-seater, get 2 trim levels

According to media reports, Volkswagen is planning to launch the Tiguan in India as a 5-seater. This comes as a contradiction to earlier speculations that had indicated the possibility of a 7-seater version with a longer wheelbase being launched to compete against full size SUVs.

Volkswagen has already confirmed that the India-spec Tiguan will be available with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine, which will be mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. It will be based on the company's MQB platform and will be 50 kg lighter than the previous-generation model. It is also being speculated that the Tiguan will come with an all-wheel drive system with a separate off-road mode selector dial.

Reports further suggest that the Tiguan will be offered in two trim levels in India - Comfortline and Highline. Features like LED headlights, panoramic sunroof, touchscreen infotainment system, faux leather upholstery and virtual release pedal will be distributed among the said variants. The Comfortline is expected to get 17-inch alloy wheels, while the Highline variant is likely to come with 18-inch units.

Volkswagen had earlier announced the commencement of production of the Tiguan at its manufacturing facility in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The SUV is expected to be launched in India next month (May 2017).
