Rumour: VW evaluating Golf GTI for India

According to a media report, Volkswagen is evaluating the Golf GTI for India. It could be imported as a completely built unit (CBU) and could be launched by end-2020.

It has been reported that the Golf GTI is likely to be imported under the government's revised rule, which allows carmakers to import 2,500 units per year as CBU or CKD without having to undergo homologation, as long as the model is homologated in the international market.

Volkswagen is already working on the 8th-generation Golf, which is expected to be unveiled later this year. It will be based on the MQB platform. Reports suggest that the new Golf GTI could be powered by a revised 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing upwards of 252 BHP and 350 Nm.

If launched, the Golf GTI is likely to be available in limited numbers.
