Rumour: Volkswagen Taigun will not come to India

Volkswagen has been considering a compact SUV for the Indian market to take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport. The company even displayed the sub-four metre Taigun at the 2014 Auto Expo, which was held earlier this year, leading to speculations that this would be the chosen vehicle. However, now it turns out that the German auto major is not planning to launch the Taigun for India.

While Volkswagen is still considering a compact SUV for India, it will not be the Taigun that reaches our shores. The company will be looking at various platforms within the Volkswagen Group to base its SUV on. It is not bound to any particular platform and will choose one that is suitable for India. The company will also look at the feasibility of manufacturing the SUV in India and selling it in various countries.

Apart from the compact SUV, Volkswagen is also planning to introduce a sub-four metre sedan. According to the company, this car will not be a compact version of the Vento. Both the sedan and the SUV are expected to be launched in the next 2-3 years.

Volkswagen has been finding the Indian market hard to crack and has found it difficult to find the right product and right cost structure to successfully challenge strong players like Maruti and Hyundai.
