Rumour: Volkswagen India to launch Tiguan in May 2017

According to media reports, Volkswagen will be launching the Tiguan SUV in India in the month of May 2017. While the automaker has already confirmed that the Tiguan will be introduced sometime this year, no official announcement about its exact launch schedule has been made yet.

Based on the MQB platform, the India-spec Tiguan is expected to be powered by a 2.0-litre TDI turbocharged diesel engine that develops 147 BHP, while being mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Compared to the previous-gen model, the new Tiguan is 50 kg lighter, though its length and width have been increased by 60 mm and 30 mm, respectively.

It is also being reported that the top-end Tiguan will be loaded with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which will come with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink connectivity and will also support satellite navigation. Lower variants are expected to get a smaller infotainment unit with a 5-inch display.

It isn't yet known whether the SUV will be assembled locally or brought into the country through the CBU route. Adopting the latter strategy could prove hazardous for the product as it will escalate the price well over its immediate competitors. It is also not yet clear whether the India-bound Tiguan will be offered as a 5-seater or a 7-seater.

Bookings of the Volkswagen Tiguan are expected to commence from the next month (April 2017).
