Rumour: Volkswagen Ameo to get only petrol engine at launch

Volkswagen is gearing up to enter the sub-4 metre sedan segment in India with the Ameo. The car was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo, held earlier this year.

The Ameo is scheduled to be launched in the second half of 2016. The car is based on the Polo and will be powered by the hatchback's 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine and 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine. However, media reports suggest that at launch, the Ameo will come only with the petrol engine.

Volkswagen is reported to be in the process of upgrading the EA 189 diesel engine. The unit is expected to get a larger turbocharger, which will bump its power up to 110 BHP. The upgraded engine is likely to be used in the Ameo and the company will wait till the power plant is ready for use before launching the diesel version of the car.

The Ameo will compete with other compact sedans such as the Ford Figo Aspire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Tata Zest.
