Rumour: Tata Nano to get automatic transmission

As a part of its HORIZONEXT strategy, Tata Motors is making major changes to all its models. Earlier this week, the company launched the Nano Twist XT, a variant of the Nano equipped with electric power steering. The addition of this feature makes the car more user friendly in bumper to bumper traffic and during parking by reducing the effort needed to steer it.

Tata Motors seems to have more developments lined up for the Nano. One of the developments includes endowing the car with an automatic transmission. A CVT or a cost-effective Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) could soon find its way into the little car. Coupled with the power steering, the automatic gearbox is expected to reduce the effort needed to drive the car, which in turn will make the Nano even easier to punt around in urban conditions than it already is.

With new features being added in quick succession, Tata Motors is clearly aiming the Nano at a different type of consumer than it has done so far and is trying to re-position the car as a smart city runabout.
