Rumour: Maybach might come to India

Earlier we reported about how the Mercedes revived the uber luxurious Maybach sub-brand. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class was officially revealed at the Auto Guangzhou as well as Los Angeles Auto Show.

In an interview, MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India - Eberhard Kern, suggested that there exists a strong demand for super-luxury cars in India, which is why they might bring Maybach to grab a piece of the pie. When it arrives, the Maybach will be an alternate option for Rolls Royce and Bentley buyers. Its own sibling - the S500 too, will be one of its core rival; product cannibalization will be evident.

The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class measures 5453 mm in length and has a wheelbase of 3365 mm. This gives the limousine an additional 207 mm in length and 200 mm in wheelbase, over the S-Class LWB. This extended wheelbase translates into more interior room and as a result, more comfort.

The Mercedes-Maybach is available in three guises. The S 600 is powered by a 6.0-litre, V12, bi-turbo engine that produces 530 bhp of power and 830 Nm of torque. The mid-range S 500 uses a 4.7-litre, V8 bi-turbo unit that makes 455 bhp of power and 700 Nm of torque. The S 400 4MATIC will be introduced later and the model will be aimed directly at the Chinese market. It is said to be powered by a 3.0-litre, V6 engine that makes 333 bhp of power and 480 Nm of torque.

When introduced in India in 2004, the Maybach did not find too many takers at the Rs. 5 crore price point. While it featured possibly all that one desires out of a car, it just wasn't as desirable or as imposing as the Rolls Royce Phantom. Mercedes-Benz is currently studying the feasibility of re-introducing this brand in the Indian market.
