Renault Kwid waiting period swells to 6 months

Earlier this month, Renault announced that the recently launched Kwid hatchback had clocked more than 25,000 bookings in a short period. The car seems to have received a very strong response in India. Dealers are reporting a waiting period of 6 months. A car booked now is not likely to be delivered before April.

Priced at from Rs. 2.57 lakh - Rs. 3.53 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Kwid is the entry-level offering from Renault. It competes with the Hyundai Eon and Maruti Suzuki Alto in the A segment.

The Kwid is larger than its competitors. It measures 3,679 mm in length, 1,579 mm in width and 1,478 mm in height. It has a wheelbase measuring 2,422 mm and a ground clearance of 180 mm. The car also has the largest boot in its class, which has a capacity of 300 litres. At present the Kwid is available in six trim levels - STD, RXE, RXE (O), RXL, RXT and RXT (O). The top end variant is equipped with features such as a Media-Nav infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, air-conditioning, and a driver airbag.

Powering the Kwid is a 799cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The engine produces 53 BHP @ 5,678 rpm and 72 Nm of torque @ 4,386 rpm. This motor has an ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure of 25.17 kpl.

A report by Gaadiwaadi.com claims that the car could get two more variants - Kwid racer and Kwid Climber. Renault is believed to have applied for these trademarks. Both variants are likely to get cosmetic changes and accessories.

A more powerful version of the Kwid, with a 1.0-litre engine, is also likely to be launched later.
