NGT bans diesel vehicles over 10 years of age in Kerala

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned diesel vehicles over 10 years of age from plying in 6 cities in the state of Kerala.

The bench has stated that all diesel vehicles whether light or heavy which are more than 10 years old shall not be permitted to ply on the roads in major cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur. Al least 2 lakh vehicles are expected to be affected if this verdict is implemented.

The NGT has given a period of 30 days from May 23, 2016 for the implementation of this verdict. After this period expires, the owner of any vehicle found to be violating this law will have to pay Rs. 5,000 as environmental compensation.

The NGT has also directed the state government to stop registrations of new diesel vehicles with engine capacities of 2,000cc and more. Public transport vehicles and vehicles used by the local authorities are exempt from this rule.
