Next-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class launched at Rs. 2.17 crore

The S-Class Launch Edition will be offered exclusively in AMG Line trim.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223) is now available in India. Unsurprisingly, you need deep pockets if you want to have one as it costs Rs. 2.17 crore (ex-showroom). The Launch Edition will be available in AMG Line trim. The car will be imported as a completely built unit (CBU).

Exterior:

The new S-Class is slightly longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model. Its wheelbase has also been increased by 50 mm. The car has a sleek 4-door coupe-like side profile. The front features a typical Mercedes grille which is flanked by reprofiled LED headlamps. It has slim LED tail lamp clusters at the back that are a huge departure from the massive wraparound units of the previous generation. The car also gets flush-fitting door handles for the first time.

Interior:

Step inside and you will instantly notice that a lot has been changed. You still get one of the most luxurious cabins in the segment but this time, it has a more futuristic touch. There is a large 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system and another screen for the digital instrument cluster. Most of the switches have now been integrated into the central touchscreen.

The S-Class comes equipped with a Burmester 4D sound system, ambient lighting with over 263 optic LED lights, the new MBUX infotainment system with voice commands and seats that recline and can massage you as you waft along.

Engine and transmission:

In India, the S-Class is available with two engine options - a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder petrol that produces 362 BHP and 500 Nm as well as a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder diesel that puts out 282 BHP and 600 Nm. All variants come equipped with a 48 V mild-hybrid system, a 9-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive and rear-wheel steering.

As expected, the new S-Class comes loaded with safety features. It has E-Active Body Control adaptive suspension, pre-safe Impulse Control and more importantly, a frontal airbag for rear passengers as well as Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities.
