Navi Mumbai: Volvo introduces the 8400 Hybrid City Bus

Volvo has introduced the 8400 Hybrid City Bus for public transport in Navi Mumbai, making the city the first ever in India to adopt hybrid buses. The Volvo 8400 Hybrid City Bus is a variant of the existing Volvo City Bus, nearly 1,500 units of which are currently operating in 34 cities across India.

The vehicle has a parallel hybrid system, which comprises a 5.0-litre, in-line 4-cylinder diesel engine and an electric motor. The 8400 Hybrid City Bus is propelled purely on electric mode from the moment is starts till it gains the required momentum. This process occurs at every stop & start during the operation cycle and the batteries get charged using regenerative braking.

Volvo has received certification from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for the Hybrid City Bus and the bus meets the bus body code and the urban bus specification norms. It is equipped with safety features such as two fire extinguishers, hammers to break the glass, long hammers to help break the glass from outside, internal stop request and emergency stop request switches, external electric and pneumatic door operating switches, a fire suppression system in the engine hatch area, etc.
