Mercedes adopts new nomenclature for diesel cars in India

In November 2014, Mercedes-Benz had announced that it would adopt a new model nomenclature for its cars (click here to read report). The company has now introduced the system in India.

The diesel models are the first to get this naming system. The CDI badge has been dropped for a simple "d".

Here's a look at the new engine designations of Mercedes-Benz cars:

  • c for "compressed natural gas" (Natural Gas Drive)
  • d for "diesel" (formerly known as BlueTEC and CDI)
  • e for "electric" (formerly known as PLUG-IN HYBRID, BlueTEC PLUG-IN HYBRID and Electric Drive)
  • f for "fuel cell" (formerly known as F-CELL)
  • h for "hybrid" (formerly known as HYBRID and BlueTEC HYBRID)

There are no suffixes for the petrol modes.

Coming to the models, the new model nomenclature is based on the five core models - A, B, C, E and S. The SUV range will start with GL. The G-Class will continue unchanged.
