Maruti Suzuki has announced its plans to set up an Industrial Training Institute in Mehsana, Gujarat. Called the Japan-India Institute of Manufacturing (JIM), this new ITI is expected to start its first batch from August 2017. Through the new institute, the automaker aims to train 300 youths per year in technical trades and Japanese shopfloor practices.
The JIM will be operated and managed by Maruti Suzuki India Limited under its corporate social responsibility initiative. The automaker has already committed an initial investment of Rs. 3.2 Crores for the institute.
The Japan-India Institute of Manufacturing will be offering seven technical courses: Fitter, Electrician, Welder, Mechanic Diesel, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Mechanic Auto Body Repair and Mechanic Auto Body Painting. The courses would be certified by NCVT (National Council of Vocational Training).
The ITI has been announced after a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) was recently signed in Tokyo between the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Government of Japan (METI) and the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India (MSDE). Under this MoC, The Governments of Japan and India will partner for a “Manufacturing Skill Transfer Promotion Programme” which aims to train 30,000 youths in India over 10 years.
