Life with my VW Vento TDI: Periodic maintenance & other updates

I really feel that my Vento has stood the test of time and kilometers put on it. The older VAGs were really built to last.

BHPian gaurav.kokra recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Rear Suspension Overhaul

When I had changed the front shock absorbers, the ride quality improved dramatically. Now the rear ones had started acting up. I squeezed every single kilometer out of them, so much that the rear suspension started clunking. And trust me, the rear parts don't give up soon.

I ordered the parts from boodmo. Since my experience of the engine mounts was fairly satisfying, I order the rear suspension mount and the rear suspension kit from the Technix brand itself.

The spring pads ordered for of VAG OE.

The dampers I ordered were of Monroe brand.

  • Spring pads: 1100
  • Dampers Monroe: 3378
  • Repair Kit Technix: 828
  • Strut Mounting: 1314

Total expense: around 7200 including labor.

The highway drives have become more stable and planted. The rear boatiness of the car has gone. I can easily cruise at 100-120 speeds which I could not before the overhaul. It was a good experience.

Major jobs coming up:

1. The clutch has started to Judder. I can extend its life, but driving it in the city is a task only for muscular people. Easily manageable on highways. expense: 18k-25k

2. The timing belt kit, the water pump and alternator tensioner bearing requires change soon. Expense: 20k

3. All Air Intake plumbing cleaning which includes Intake manifold, intercooler, anti shudder valve and EGR. All need thorough cleaning as the car has started to smoke regularly.

4. Front Suspension bushings. I got this work done way back in 2019. It has been holding very strong except the link rods. They would surely need a change soon. Expense: 10k-15k.

5. Paint Job: The paint needs refurbishing when closely inspected. The rear right side quarter panel has started to show blisters in the paint.

All in all, the car is still in a great condition. I really feel that my Vento has stood the test of time and kilometers put on it. The older VAGs were really built to last. There is not a single squeak inside the cabin even after my family banging the doors close on a regular basis.

All electrical and electronics are in a working condition except the automatic boot release mechanism which just gave up 2 weeks back.

I really cannot complain for this vehicle. It has only demanded what was required and nothing more. Touchwood!

Being a 2013 model, it has only 3 more years left on it. I hope I am able to renew the registration in 2028 and it really is a vehicle that is built to last. I am hoping to fulfill my other financial obligations before I splurge on a new vehicle.

This vehicle has stood strong by my side at all times. Never giving up on us and always reaching the destination safe and sound no matter how I drive. Touchwood.

I sometimes feel like selling it and buying a newer preowned car. But doesn't make sense again. As you really don't have such vehicles plying on the road anymore. The later VAGs are surely diluted when compared to these.

I also bought a 2015 Polo Highline TDI for my sister on the basis of my experience of the Vento.

But that is a story for another day.

I'll sign off with some good shots of my car.
