Hyundai considering ix35 based SUV for India

South Korean carmaker Hyundai, is gearing up to introduce a slew of utility vehicles for India. The company plans to have a range of five new utility vehicles in the market over the next 3-4 year. The expected price range for these products will be between Rs. 6.5 lakhs and Rs. 25 lakhs.

Among the cars being considered is a new SUV based on the ix35 that is likely to be launched in 2018. This vehicle is being billed as a competitor for the Mahindra XUV500.

Hyundai has already launched the i20 Active cross hatch in India. The company has started testing the ix25 (codenamed GS in India) and plans to pit it against the Renault Duster. This vehicle is expected to be launched during the festive season. The third vehicle being developed is an MPV, codenamed IP (click here to read report).

Utility vehicles account for 21% of the total vehicle market in India with about 5 units sold every year. Hyundai aims to capture a double-digit share of the utility segment in the short term.

At present Hyundai has a market share of 16% in India. It is aiming to increase this to 20% by 2020.
