Hyundai AX1 micro-SUV spied testing

The AX1 is likely to be based on the Santro platform and could compete with the Maruti S-Presso.

Hyundai's new micro-SUV (codenamed: AX1) has been spied testing in South Korea.

The Hyundai AX1 is likely to be based on the K1 platform shared with the new generation Santro. The spy images suggest that the car could feature quirky styling with headlamps positioned lower down on the front bumper. The rear door handles are positioned on the C-pillars and the 6-spoke alloy wheels are shod with low profile tyres. The car has an upright stance that is typical of SUVs.

Rumours suggest that the AX1 could be powered by a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a turbocharged unit with a similar displacement. The engines could be mated to either an automated manual or a proper automatic gearbox.

The Hyundai AX1 is being developed for South-East Asian markets. In India, the car could compete with the Maruti S-Presso and the upcoming Tata HBX.
