I did Hyderabad - Nagpur - Betul - Bhopal - Ujjain in October. This is the route I take twice a year. I always take a halt in Nagpur as I travel with a pet. Nagpur being a big city has a few pet-friendly hotel options.
About 515 KM from home to the hotel in Nagpur. Completely 4-lane road with a good road surface in Telangana stretch. There is lane expansion (4 to 6 lanes) during the first 40-50 kms and a bypass flyover being constructed at Medchal slowing you down somewhat. Also, 2 or 3 additional flyovers in the way at bypasses of bigger towns. But overall great road.
Maharashtra stretch road quality is not that great with lots of potholes which are patched up shoddily and some new potholes too. But you can maintain decent speed, just need more attention to avoid potholes.
I typically start at around 6.45-7 AM and reach the hotel in Nagpur by 2-3 PM with a few 5-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break.
Distance is about 540KM from Nagpur hotel to my home in Ujjain. You can turn towards Indore from Dewas, Dewas to Indore and Ujjain both are similar distances and similar road conditions.
Nagpur till Betul is perfect 4 laned road. Less traffic, no potholes and some stretches with good scenic views too.
Betul to Bhopal is 90% 4 lanes except Bathera ghat and a couple of forest reserve areas which are two laned. Ratapani reserve area has 4 laning work ongoing.
Road quality is average with potholes in some small stretches. Traffic is low to medium.
Bhopal to Ujjain via Dewas is again fully 4 laned. Bhopal to Deawas is an old 4 lane, so smaller shoulders, no lane markings and several crossings (without red lights), however, the road surface is pretty good. Traffic is high and a lot of 2 wheelers too, making it difficult to overtake sometimes.
I start around 6.45-7 AM and reach Ujjain by 3-3.30 PM with a few 5-minute breaks, and a breakfast break of about 20 minutes.
