Honda Motorcycles files patent for tank-mounted airbags

The airbag comes off the motorcycle, seals itself to retain inflation and stays wrapped around the rider.

According to reports, Honda Motorcycles has filed a patent for a new airbag system.

The new airbag system is different in both design and mechanism compared to that already in use on the Honda Goldwing Tourer. While the current rider protection system is limited to use on large motorcycles with a bulky front end (like the Goldwing), the new airbag system can be used across segments, including naked streetfighters.

As per the patent images, the new airbag system is mounted on the rear section of the fuel tank and comes with a unique 'W' design. The system is further accompanied by sensors, which, in the event of a crash, deploy the airbags. When deployed, the central part of the 'W' design protects the chest, while the two outer limbs wrap under the rider's arms and extend to the back, adding extra side protection as well. Also, once deployed, the airbag comes off the motorcycle, seals itself to retain inflation and stays wrapped around the rider even if they are thrown off the bike.

However, as with any patent, it remains to be seen if and when Honda actually puts the new airbag system into production.
