Honda Jazz to come with CVT gearbox

Honda is expected to launch the new Jazz hatchback in India in the coming months. The car will be available with a choice of two engines - 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel.

The 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, i-VTEC petrol engine is carried over from the Brio and Amaze and develops 87 bhp and 109 Nm of torque. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, i-DTEC diesel motor, which is also used in the Amaze, City and Mobilio, produces 98 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. While the diesel engine is only likely to get a manual gearbox, the petrol unit will come with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions.

The automatic gearbox will be the same CVT unit that does duty in the Honda City sedan. CVT gearboxes are notorious for the "rubber-band effect", which makes them rather undesirable to drive.

The Jazz will be manufactured in India at Honda's Tapukara facility. This should help the company keep its price competitive.
