GAC Pickup 01 production confirmed; to rival Tesla Cybertruck

It will be sold in Australia, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Mexico and other countries where GAC is present.

Tesla’s radical Cybertruck will now have a rival. Chinese manufacturer GAC has announced that its Pickup 01 will now go into production. The concept was unveiled at the recent Shanghai Motor Show.

While a market launch is expected in 2027, GAC has said that the Pickup 01 won’t be limited to the Chinese market. It will be sold in Australia, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Mexico and other countries where GAC is present. GAC also has joint ventures with Toyota and Honda.

GAC Pickup 01 Concept

Coming to the concept, the Pickup 01 gets a boxy, angular design, and the stainless steel body panels remind you of the Cybertruck. The front end, with its flat bonnet, looks similar to the Hummer EV. The truck is expected to focus heavily on off-road performance. It will feature massive ground clearance, exposed tow hooks and big wheels. There are light bars on top of the windshield, and there are cameras instead of traditional ORVMs.

The interior of the concept is quite interesting. It features a steering wheel mounted on a custom dashboard slider, allowing it to shift from the right to the left side of the cabin. This would make offering LHD and RHD versions easy, but it wouldn’t meet the global safety standard. So, one can expect major changes on the interior as well.

GAC has not yet announced details on the powertrains that will be used in the pickup.
