Formula 1: Max Verstappen wins 2016 Spanish Grand Prix

Red Bull's Max Verstappen has won the Spanish Formula One Grand Prix ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel. At 18 years of age, he has become the youngest driver and the first Dutch racer to win a Grand Prix. It was also Verstappen's first race for the Red Bull team after he was drafted in from the Toro Rosso team, while Russian driver Daniil Kvyat was demoted.

The opening lap of the race saw the leading pair of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton crash out after the latter attempted an overtaking manoeuvre on his Mercedes team mate. Rosberg moved over to cover Hamilton forcing him on the grass resulting in him losing control and spinning out, taking the championship leader with him.

The incident brought the safety car out on the track. After the safety car period, Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo led the race with Verstappen in second position and Vettel and Raikkonen behind them. However, different pit stop strategies resulted in Verstappen and Raikkonen emerging in the lead with Vettel and Ricciardo in third and fourth at the end of the final round of stops.

Verstappen kept his cool and held off Raikkonen to claim the victory. A battle between former team mates Vettel and Ricciardo spiced things up towards the end of the race. However, a puncture on the penultimate lap saw the Australian drop out of the fight for the final spot on the podium.

Williams driver Valterri Bottas finished in fifth position. Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso), Sergio Perez (Force India), Filipe Massa (Williams), Jenson Button (McLaren) and Daniil Kvyat rounded up the top ten.

After five races, Rosberg leads the World Drivers' Championship with 100 points. Raikkonen is in second position with 61 points. Hamilton has dropped to third with 57 points. In the World Constructors' Championship, Mercedes leads with 157 points. Ferrari is in second place with 109 points and Red Bull is in third with 94 points.
