Ford and Volkswagen have been in talks to jointly develop electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous technology since 2018. Both carmakers have now finalized their alliance plans, which will also include developing pick-up trucks and vans.
As part of the collaboration, Ford will be building an EV based on Volkswagen's MEB architecture. It will be designed and engineered by Ford in Cologne, Germany. The new model is likely to be offered alongside the Mustang Mach-E.
It is estimated that Ford could deliver 6,00,000 EVs based on the MEB platform. Therefore, the deal is also expected to help Volkswagen to achieve better economies of scale.
The two carmakers also plan to develop two commercial vans and a pick-up truck. Ford will develop and manufacture the new Volkswagen Amarok. It is expected to share its underpinnings with the Ford Ranger. Ford will also develop the new Transit and Volkswagen Transporter, while Volkswagen will be developing the new Ford Transit Connect that will be based on the Volkswagen Caddy.
In addition to new products, Ford and Volkswagen are also working on Argo AI's autonomous vehicle technology.
