Bharat NCAP could be based on updated GNCAP norms

The new GNCAP test protocols will come into effect from July 2022.

According to a media report, the government of India is likely to issue a draft notification regarding India's first new car assessment program in the coming months. It is also said that Bharat NCAP norms could be based on Global NCAP's revised test protocols.

The new GNCAP test protocols will come into effect from July 2022. These now include the side impact test as well. Bharat NCAP is likely to adopt this as well. Besides, cars are expected to be tested at 64 km/h instead of 56 km/h, required for type approval certification.

Safety features like electronic stability control and six airbags are expected to be made compulsory in order to comply with the stricter crash test norms. Some automakers have even started offering advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in select models.

Bharat NCAP crash tests could be conducted at ARAI in Pune, iCAT in Manesar or GARC in Chennai.
