Assam: Car sales resume as Gauhati High Court reverses ban

Last week, the Gauhati High Court passed an order banning the sale of sale and registration of small cars in Assam, which do not meet Global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) crash test norms. Now, the Court has reversed this ban after a petition filed by The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) challenging it.

The ban had affected Approximately 140 models (including variants) from different manufacturers. Sales of some of the best-selling cars in the country such as the Maruti Suzuki Alto, Hyundai i10 and Eon and Honda Jazz were hit by the ban.

"There cannot be any prohibition restricting registration and sale of four-wheelers with a mass of up to 1,500 kg and quadricycles that have undergone the crash and emission tests conforming to the requirements and standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards... and vehicles which have been certified by the statutory authority." the court said in its order.
The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2015.

Global NCAP norms are not applicable in India at the moment. About 5,000 cars are sold in the state of Assam every month.
