The new-generation BMW 5-Series has managed to earn the top score of 5-Stars from Euro NCAP. The luxury sedan was awarded an overall score of 81% after various crash tests. It was tested in the 520d guise.
The 2017 5-Series earned 91% points in the adult occupancy safety parameter as the body shell was successfully able to insulate the occupants from any fatal intrusions. The passenger compartment was found to be stable during the frontal offset impact test. The car lost a few points in the full-width test as the knee airbag didn't deploy correctly. The side barrier test saw the car perform ideally as it earned the maximum points available. The rear seat occupants were also found to be aptly isolated from any crash-related jerks or intrusions. Additionally, the car scored maximum points in the driver assistance parameters as the automatic emergency braking system performed correctly at all test speeds.
In the child occupancy protection department, the new 5-Series managed to score 85% points. The test was conducted on dummies of a 6-year old and a 10-year old child. Overall protection of both dummies was good, though the dummy of a 6-year old child experienced some marginal issues around the chest area during rapid deceleration.
