Currently, Maruti Suzuki reports monthly sales based on factory despatches to dealers. This could soon change, as the company now plans to implement a new reporting system based on actual retail sales from the government’s Vahan portal.
Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki said, “We have been talking that it is very important to focus on the retail rather than on the wholesale numbers. We have moved over to Vahan, and from this year onwards, we are going to totally follow the Vahan numbers only, because that gives the actual picture of how retail is happening in the market.”
Except for Telangana, RTOs of most states share vehicle registration data on the Vahan portal. Banerjee revealed that Maruti Suzuki was working with the government of Telangana and suggesting they come on board. It is said that the retail data from the state is expected to be available on the Vahan system in 1-2 months.
Banerjee believes that the entire industry should start reporting sales based on Vahan data, as it provides the most accurate view of the market.
